Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is alike a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit—Jeremiah 17:7-8
God is calling us to trust him. He has set us apart from the world, not just in attitude and conduct but to be those who put our trust in him. That means trusting him at all times, and in all situations, even when life, people, and circumstances start to change and when things do not appear very hopeful. To willfully turn away from the bleakness, disappointing reports or findings, or impossibility in front of us and choose to put our trust in him.
God calls us to trust in his steadfast love, to trust him to know what is best for our life, to trust that he has a good future planned for us, to trust that he can make good come out of all things; even the worst things we can imagine. To trust him to act at just the right time and that he will never be late, to trust he hears and answers our prayers, to trust that even though life and this world is constantly changing he himself remains the same yesterday, today and forevermore. To trust him with our future, to trust in him and not our own resources or riches, to trust him with our whole heart and soul, to trust in his power that is unseen instead of the powers at work that we can see. And God knows putting complete trust in him will be one of the biggest, most persistent challenges we will deal with us again and again; for trust is never a settled matter with the devil and he never stops tempting or provoking even the most seasoned soul and steadfast heart.
At those times and moments we are having difficulty trusting, God stirs our memories. He helps us to recall the times he did miraculous things, performed miracles and wonders in our life or circumstances. Helps us to remember how he acted on our behalf yesterday, how he healed us before, how he took care of our enemy or antagonist, how he made ends meet, how he moved a mountain or unlocked a door, how he made a way out of no way when things did not look very good at all. To remember that he is our strength and our stronghold, our refuge in the day of trouble, our deliverer, our help, our greatest cheerleader, our faithful God in whom we can not only trust but put all our trust.
True trust in God is not tied to trusting him to do what we want him to do or what we think is best but trusting that even when things do not work out the way we want or planned, that he knows exactly what he is doing; that he is always working things out for our good and working on our behalf.
I wonder how many times the prophet Jeremiah had to reach back and remember God’s promise to him, which God made at the time he called him as a prophet, when he told Jeremiah, “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” To recall God’s trustworthy words even when he was in danger or being pursued by his enemies.
God has promised the person who puts their trust in him will not be like a shrub drying up in the desert but like a tree planted by the water, whose roots are fed by the streams, so even in drought there is no need to fear or become anxious. The Lord promises, to trust in people is a dangerous thing, but to trust in God there is only blessings, prosperity, and the promise of a good future. Let’s Pray,
Dear God, regarding trust, and putting our trust in you continually, regardless of what we see or do not see, hear or do not hear, we are like those who cry out, “Lord we trust you, help our distrust!” cause us to be steadfast and not go between being hot and cold, neither let us remain lukewarm in trust but trusting you thoroughly, fervently, eternally, in good and through the bad. May we lean not on our own understanding but trust in you with all our heart. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
