No One Knows When

But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Matthew 24:36, NIV)

Sometimes we may feel startled at how quickly a year has passed. We might look at the calendar and realize there are only so many days left in the year, so many days before Christmas, or New Year’s, and think “how quickly time has flown by!” Of course, we can’t be totally taken aback because we can see it coming. As each day passes we know that eventually we will be right here, looking at endings and beginnings. Because we know these days are coming, we can prepare for them accordingly.

Jesus says there is a day we cannot know when or how it will come and that is the day he returns. People over the centuries have tried to predict it but of course since we are all still here, it never happened, and their calculations have been off. It is not just about predicting how or when the world will end, but the return of Christ.

If you are a Bible, prophecy believing on the promises of God, person, then you have no doubt this will take place. Jesus tells us this much because even though we cannot know the day, we can at least be prepared for it. When the Apostle Paul visited the Thessalonians, he found them doing nothing except waiting for the return of Christ. Paul told them not to try to figure that out, but just keep living life in a way that was pleasing to their Lord. That’s a good word for us today. We can’t know the day nor hour, but we can and should just keep living life in a way we know pleases our Lord. Doing those things, we know he would approve of. Practicing those things we learn in Scriptures, through Christ-centered messages, the ways we learn are in line with his messages and mantra of love.

The end will come, Christ will return when we least expect him, and we will be ready if we live in faith and with that thought in mind. Let’s Pray

We can understand why you don’t reveal this day to us, Lord, because we would leave our spiritual preparation for the last possible moment. Help us to live in eager expectation and prepare our hearts and minds, now, for that time so we are not taken off guard. Amen

Reflective Questions for Soul-Tending:
