What the Lord Says Regarding Being Fashioned

Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. (Psalm 119:73, ESV)

I spent the better part of a day fashioning a new pair of kitchen curtains by using an old pair. As they were, they did not fit my window—purchased long ago for a former home—but I was not ready to throw them out, either. As I looked at them, I had a vision for the new pair and set about measuring, cutting, and then stitching them. The result was exactly what I was aiming for and had seen in my mind’s eye.

The psalmist said God not only formed us, he not only created us but fashioned us. When you fashion something you do it in a particular way, you have a vision for that item or thing you are creating and make it the way you see it and for the purposes you have in mind for it.

God has fashioned us for his purposes. The Bible says we are the handiwork of God; God’s own special creation and he wants to complete what he started in us from the beginning. He has fashioned us for purposes that are great and awesome, fashioning us to live by his commands. Not just the ten “Thou Shalt Not’s” as we think of them, but those that lead us into his bottomless well of blessings waiting and especially designed for us.

Think of your own life and how God fashioned you; everything he thoughtfully knit into you. You are his jewel, his own special creation, fashioned by his own hand to be a remarkable reflection of him. Let’s Pray,

God, how wondrously you made us! You not only formed us in the womb but fashioned us and now have plans for us. We pray, complete what you started in us. Complete your holy vision by giving us understanding and help us to love your commands so we can enjoy all the blessings you have for us. Amen

Reflective Questions for Self and Soul-Tending:

What does it mean to you to know the definition of fashioning and that you have been not only formed, but fashioned by God?

How will you incorporate today’s message and verse into your plan of self and soul-care?
