Regarding our Supernatural Triangle, Pt. 2
Your lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance (Psalm 16:6 ESV)
Sometimes when we drive down certain streets we can see some awesome property. Of course the “higher end”, more expensive estates are all protected by gates or fences and alarm systems. You cannot just walk onto their property or have access. In David’s psalm he is praising God for his promised heavenly, eternal inheritance but also about the earthly life he lives. David’s psalm can help us envision what living within the holy, supernatural triangle looks like. David describes it well. He says it is living within the pleasant lines or places God himself lays out for us.
David’s prayer helps us envision the kind of life afforded us when we live within the lines God has laid out for us. They are pleasant boundaries, not because we don’t experience any trials, troubles, or challenges; many hard and difficult things that come with earthly life, but because we are covered and surrounded by God, afforded every blessing and provision that comes because of being in relationship with him. David knew personally, what this kind of life looked like. He had many enemies and fought many battles, experienced times when he was not well physically, emotionally, or even spiritually, yet he could still describe and see his life in such a way because he knew firsthand what it meant to be under the covenant care of God. It was a safe, reassuring, and joyful place for him.
The things we experience within these boundaries are helpful for us. God is a providing God, a protective God, a healing God, a nurturing God, a loving God, a compassionate and forgiving God, a patient, generous, and redeeming God. Within his lines are peace, wisdom, patience, strength, and happiness. Because we live in the lines he has formed for us we experience all the benefits of living under his covenant. This could be why David wondered why anyone would want to live outside of God or the boundaries he has established for those who belong to him. Once we have experienced life in this way we will never want to return to our old or former way of life. Let’s Pray,
Father, there is life in this world, shaped by the world, that many choose, but there is life in you, shaped by you, where you have made sure the lines fall in pleasant places for us. Help us to desire that life—the one you shape and design—more than the life the world shapes for us. Amen
