The Holy Spirit Brings Out the Best in Us…

When, however, the Spirit comes… (John 16:13, GNT)

Who brings out the best in you? Inspires you to be the best version of yourself. Makes you want to be a better person. Good friends, spouses, people we admire have a way of bringing out the best in us. Somehow, when we are in their presence, hanging out with them, they bring out the best parts of us and make us want to be a better us.

When we think about it, that’s what the Holy Spirit does. As we hang out together (He abides in us and we abide in him, John 15) his personality and character begin to rub off on us, we find ourselves admiring his traits, wanting to be more like him, taking up more of his ways. Maybe his kindness and gentleness start showing up in us. Maybe we are acting more like him in the way we talk to others or think about life and other people. Maybe his wisdom is rubbing off on us, or maybe his attitude of patience and being long-suffering starts becoming ours. Maybe our heart is influenced to love and forgive more easily.

We might not recognize it as the Spirit’s influence on us right away, but that’s what is taking place. We call it sanctification, but the Holy Spirit simply recognizes it as our becoming more like the image we were created to be.

When the Holy Spirit comes, he brings truth, and when we embrace him as our constant companion we don’t have to enroll in programs, labor in vain, torture ourselves with rigid standards of living or take up  austere religiosity, simply enjoy being in the Holy Spirit’s company. Let’s Pray,

Holy Spirit, we invite you to hang out with us always. In your company we will be made better and begin to look more and more like the image we were made in. Amen
