God Gives Us the Right Size Portion

1.Read Psalm 16:5-6

The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

2.Study Psalm 16:5-6

My newest favorite thing to make are homemade mug cakes and desserts. They are the perfect size for a one-or-two-person dessert or if you’d like something special and don’t have a lot of time for baking. You don’t need many ingredients: I make mine with just three or four ingredients. They don’t require eggs, and some don’t even use milk, which is perfect for my husband and me. You can make them in all kinds of flavors, and you don’t have to worry about leftovers which is especially important if you are trying to control your weight or keep sweet temptations to a minimum.

Just like a “mug” dessert can be the perfect treat for one or two people God knows something about designing things perfectly for us also. David said the portion God had ordained just for him was perfect. In other psalms we can be reminded that we are uniquely, wondrously, and fearfully made (Psalm 139:14) so that means any plans God makes for our life are going to be perfectly suited and just for us. Knowing how God does that will keep our jealously down and will keep us from coveting the good things we see happening in the lives of others. The gifts God sends, the blessings he designs, and even the spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit assigns are all with us in mind, individually. Only God knows how our life is going to go and what he needs to put within the lines of birth and death. Because God’s plan and portion is perfectly suited for us, we never have to wonder why our ministry, family, spouse, job, house, body, hair, health, can’t be more like so and so’s.

When David said “The LORD is my chosen portion and cup he meant it as a two-way street: God was enough for him and whatever the LORD did for him was the right thing and he accepted it without question. He did not concern himself with wondering why God had given someone else a bigger portion of land or why he did not have something someone else had. He not only accepted what God ordained for him he considered it as a beautiful inheritance.

3.Meditate on Psalm 16:

What from Psalm 16:5-6 will you carry with you into your day and activities, meditate on in your heart and mind? Did David say something that was especially meaningful or touching to you today? Did you find something he said comforting, or find yourself appreciative of being reminded of God’s perfect design for your life?

4.Pray Psalm 16: 5-6

Gracious God, how well you know me and how my life should be! Keep me from being envious, or coveting the life, gifts, possessions, or details of another’s life and help me appreciate my life as it is, knowing you have made it this way—the good and the bad—according to your plans and will for me. I praise you for holding my cup, I choose you as my portion, and I will be happy with my life because it is your will for me. Amen
