Encouraging Lesson: God as Our Rock

1.Read Psalm 144:1-2

Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for battle and my fingers for war, he is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.

2.Studying Psalm 144:1-2

A sizeable rock can provide shade, it can even provide shelter. Can you picture God as your rock? Not the size you can hold in your hand or throw; not even the size you might use to line your flower bed or use as decoration on your lawn, but the size rock that can support the weight of your entire body without budging or shifting. The rock you might think of as a bolder; something you can lean against without fear of toppling over.

In this psalm David describes God as his Rock. When Hannah prayed to the LORD concerning her inability to conceive in 1 Samuel 2:2, she prayed, “there is none like the LORD; there is none besides you; there is no rock like God.” Meaning no manmade gods or remedies for our problems can compare to God the Rock and miracle-worker. When God is your Rock he is also your Deliverer, your Fortress and Stronghold, your Refuge and trusted Counselor, your Protection, your Healer, your Shield and as the psalm says, the one who subdues even your enemies. In fact, there is nothing your Rock can’t do or be.

3.Meditating on Psalm 144:1-2

Are there enemies you face, something in life, some vulnerability you feel, anything in your life where picturing or claiming God as your Rock is comforting or assuring? What words or phrase in Psalm 144:1-2 will you carry with you today?

4.Praying Psalm 144:1-2

Dear God, my Rock, my Deliverer, Fortress, Stronghold and Refuge from the storms of life, I praise and thank you for your steadfast and immoveable presence. Amen
