He is Alpha and Omega
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
He who was seated on the throne said, “I’m making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 21:5-6)
For Insight
Talk about saving the best for last! In the last book of the Bible Jesus reveals He is the Alpha and Omega; the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. Up until this point we have read and learned His many names: Emmanuel, God with us, Rose of Sharon, Lamb of God, Prince of Peace, Friend, Savior, Good Shepherd, Christ our Healer, and now as we come to the conclusion of John’s Revelation Jesus adds something more for us, He gives John something else to write and us to rejoice about: He was there in the beginning with God at creation and will not fail to complete the work He began in us. His name, Alpha and Omega is only mentioned three times in the entire Bible; all of them in the book of Revelation (1:7-8; 21:5-6; 22:13)
What a Comforter and encourager our loving, faithful Savior is. He never misses an opportunity to let us know and remind us of His power at work in our lives. In the beginning He, the Father, and the Holy Spirit worked as One to make humans in their image (Gen. 1:26). Jesus, the Alpha and Omega entered into our darkness that we might be redeemed, saved from our sinful condition and sentence of eternal death, and before He ascended to His throne in heaven, where He sits at the right hand of God the Father, promises to not only make a place for us in heaven, but return for us when our time on earth is done.
Just like Jesus is Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last we can praise Him from the beginning of life until the end. Every time we are inclined to worry or become anxious about problems and outcomes, about life’s shifting and changing situations, about our finances, health scares, or relationships falling apart under pressure, we can remember Jesus was not only there in the beginning but with us all the way until the very end of time.
Praying Revelation 21:5-6
Jesus just as You said You are making everything new and thank You for having John record Your words and every event we read about. May we trust you more and more and never forget who and how far-reaching You are. Amen
