Serving Behind the Scenes

Key Verse to Read and Treasure

Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. (Revelations 12:7, ESV)

For Insight

There are people who don’t mind working behind the scenes. It’s said that behind every great man is a great woman and I believe that, but I also believe behind every successful person is a village of supportive people rooting them on and encouraging them through rough spots and periods of self-doubt and discouragement. Many people don’t like the spotlight shined on them. It makes them uncomfortable. They just do what they do and don’t want people fussing over what they do. The wife of Oswald Chambers was like that. During his lifetime she wrote down all his sermons, homilies, lessons and talks as he dictated them and after his death took those notes and published them, not under her own name, Biddy Chambers, but his. That’s amazing. It was more important to her to share with the world his amazing talent and gift from God than it was to get credit for what she had done.

When we read our Bible, we discover God has constructed several layers of protection around us. He’s serious about our being covered and having all the assistance that the people of God can have both on earth and in heaven. We can see how he has sent his holy angels as messengers and those who guard and keep us in our day-to-day journey. Though some have gotten glimpses of their angel, most of the time we don’t get to see them. They are not visible that we might look upon them or worship them, for the purpose of getting our attention or devotion but serve the Lord by serving us. There are also angels who are called archangels. They are the ones who battle the unseen forces of evil in places we can’t even imagine. They are the ones who go toe to toe (or wing to wing) with the angels of darkness that work against us and are always intent of keeping God’s blessings from us. The archangels are a mighty army and powerful force not even Satan or his army are any match for them.

In every home we have lived in we have placed a card with the arch angel Michael over our doorposts as a reminder to us of who is keeping guard and fighting our battles in the unseen places. God’s archangels have no need to be front and center or get our attention, nor should we seek them out only know they are here above us, fighting for our wellbeing. Martin Luther wrote when we get home to heaven and are able to see with our own eyes how the forces of evil tried to take us out but also see how the archangels defended and fought our battles we will be astounded. Even today as you and I go about our normal activities and have no thoughts of angels on earth or arch angels in the heavenlies, God is helping, assisting, covering, defending, and protecting us in every way. When we make it to the end of the day safely and unscarred, we might remember to pause and thank God for his mighty band of angels and archangels who serve Him behind the scenes.

Praying Revelation 12:7

Mighty God the earth is Your footstool and the skies under Your command. Not one part of this world or universe is without Your presence and Satan nor any of his army can get to us. thank You for the mighty band of angels who fight for us and for the mighty band of archangels who contend with evil, letting Your blessings get to us and cover us in every way. Amen

Prayer Challenge

Remember to thank God daily for the way he uses angels and archangels to protect you against any force of evil.
